Don Boudreaux shares his favorite Mencken quote and I will reproduce it here because it is now my favorite Mencken quote.
The saddest life is that of a political aspirant under democracy. His failure is ignominious and his success is disgraceful.
Note that I am being completely honest when I say that I had never read or heard that quote before, even though it happens to be remarkably similar to any number of quips made by Senator Joseph Ivy. Though, I will regrettably admit, none of Ivy’s quips are nearly as wonderfully brief as Mencken’s.
