A whitehouse.gov petition has been circulating – I’ve seen it mostly on Facebook – in an attempt to spur some change in existing auto sales laws. The hope amongst the petition signers is something like: Tesla should be able to sell cars directly to consumers rather than having to sell through auto dealers (which is required for all other auto makers in pretty much everywhere USA).

This (selling cars directly to consumers) is a great idea, but it should not be limited to Tesla. No automaker should have to sell through a dealer. It’s too bad the petition is narrowly worded to support Tesla. As such, the petition – which is certainly not legislation – itself creates an unfair advantage for Tesla versus the other automakers. The solution to the problem is not to create more unfair advantages.
