Mark Perry posts this excellent link on how green energy, cap and trade, and anything that makes energy more expensive is devastating to the poor. The bottom line is that if you’re against oil, gas, and coal (the cheapest forms of energy available), then you’re “against” the poor.*

Causing an increase in energy prices for any reason is the most regressive tax imaginable.

An equivalent but alternative take on this topic is this TED talk by Hans Rosling, “The Magic Washing Machine”. This is perhaps the greatest TED talk I have ever watched. It’s so good I’ve watched it about 3 times.

* – note that similar arguments can be made with respect to organic food or buying local (where buying local is construed to mean something like not buying from “big box” stores). Anything that drives up the cost of basic commodities is massively regressive.
