It turns out that most of the Forbes 400 richest people made it onto that list by working hard; few made the list by inheriting wealth.

The list is broken into groups based on background and it turns out that the largest group came from the most humble backgrounds. There are 50% more Forbes 400 members who came from low or lower middle class backgrounds than inherited enough wealth to be automatically on the list.

The self-made story is the right story – it can and does happen.
