Progress. George Will asks this question of the concept, of the “movement”:

“Progress, as progressives understand it, means advancing away from, up from, something. But from what?”

Take a moment and ponder the answer. Understand the question within the context of government, and the history of the United States’ government. Where did we start? So progress must mean what? Will:

“From the Constitution’s constricting anachronisms.”

Are the rights of men to be determined by government? Or are they to be secured by government, existing prior to and independent of government? Is man’s freedom a right – man’s freedom, say, not to be a slave – that exists because government makes it so or because it is so. Do we want a government in which politicians can enslave whomever they wish based upon their whims or the whims of a majoritarian electorate?

Will’s column is good. Read it.
