Wired discusses TED talks on whether, in the future, we’re doomed or bound for greater wealth, prosperity, peace, and all sorts of other good stuff.

My question for the doomsday crowd: what evidence is there (historical or otherwise) suggesting anything or than prosperity?

Alternatively, or differently since it really is a different issue: given that there is no such evidence (in a global/macro/big-picture sense the past is in every way worse than the present), why do people continue to espouse such predictions? More importantly: why do people believe such predictions?
