People often say that only government can do certain things. That’s true of things like providing military protection and enforcing laws. Aid, charity, disaster relief, and the like are not amongst that list of things:

This is how people ought to help people: freely, voluntarily. It builds community. It creates friends. We don’t end up resenting those to whom we have given money to but to whom we’ve given that money involuntarily (via taxation and redistribution).
